So far, I have talked about tips and things to consider while doing the project or how to make the process successful for DIY projects. since I started talking about tips.
However, this time I’m going to talk about something we do during the process. And after everything is finished. which will help to make sure a DIY project lasts a long time.
That’s what I’m going to talk about in this post. If you’ve read my DIY projects, you’ll know that I’ve made a lot of decorations and useful items to help with everyday life.
But how can we keep it useful or safe for a long time? I’m talking about breaking down or falling apart after a while. It happened to me, and I thought it would be helpful to share it with you guys. When it gets ripped by someone. Some projects can be made of paper.
Mini announcement
Before we dive into the post and find out what the things are and how to make sure a DIY project lasts long. I would like to say that very soon I’m going to start doing DIY project videos on YouTube.
It will be a big move, and I have been thinking about it for the last week. And I decided that I was going to do it. Make sure to subscribe to the blog for the announcement and more awesome DIY projects.
How to make sure a DIY project lasts long

So when we are doing or building something. We have to be responsible for making it strong, and there are some points to which we need to pay attention to make it a last-long DIY project. It will help us ensure that we did everything correctly and that it will last a long time.
However, when you want to make something last long. It’s not all about what I’m going to mention to you guys. How to make sure a DIY project lasts long. These things are just some of the things. Because it depends on what can break or ruin the project or DIY craft.
Whether it’s a decoration or a useful project. Also, it doesn’t matter if it’s a wooden DIY or plastic. Maybe you are like me, using cardboard and paper. This will help. Any material or idea, I’m sure how to make sure a DIY project lasts long will help you to enjoy what is crafted for a long time.
I mean, my goal next is to make a project using other materials like wood and iron haha. Hopefully, this year, I will manage to do it. Well, that was my wish. But, the year went by with me struggling to catch up with everything. So, I couldn’t start crafting using other materials. However, it is still my goal, and I will achieve it.
FYI
When you ask how to make sure a DIY project lasts long. Some questions might help you to achieve that.
- Did you glue everything well?
- Does this project have something sensitive?
- Did you make a strong base for it?
And the list goes on. Until you cover everything necessary to make sure the DIY craft lasts for a long time. That’s the process from start to finish after we finish crafting something. These can be very helpful before you craft. You need to know how to make sure a DIY project lasts long.
There are types of crafts that are easy. Sometimes we don’t pay attention to those. And it’s very important to know, no matter how easy or difficult it is. We always need to keep in mind that we need them for a long time.
You can also find the benefits of doing DIY crafts here. If you are not sure how DIY crafts can help you. Learn some benefits of crafting at home.
1. Study certain aspects of the project
Anyway, like I said since it’s us who will make the project. When crafting something, there are certain aspects or things to look at and be careful with.
I have made a 3D model and did a lot more. There are many things to think of and plan. For example, how to make the front of the 3D plane. Take some time to think about everything before doing anything. That’s a good quote for how to make sure a DIY project lasts long.
Another example is decoration. Spend some time thinking about whether the project has a wall or does it requires more pieces and stuff like that? Then, study how I can make it firm so it won’t fall. These things ensure that it will be strong.
For example, I know this because I have done it too many times. But for a wall to be firm and stay still, you either glue it to two walls on the sides or have something to hold it from the base. Like a column glued from the base to the middle or above the wall. So it won’t fall, you know.
I always recommend taking some time to walk through certain aspects of the project that need attention. So during the process, you already know how to handle it. And you just need to craft and do the things you planned before crafting.
To be honest, I did a lot of walls or something standing like a letter, and when I was about to finish, it fell hahaha. Well, good try to me, lol. It takes me some time to get things sorted out. And as I kept crafting, I learned a lot more about how to make sure a DIY project lasts long.
So now, I’m taking the time to study how I can make it firm and make sure it won’t fall. I always aim to make DIY projects for the long term.
2. Take a moment to check
I have said this one before in my previous posts. However, I said that it is important to not move to the next step quickly. And this one explains why it’s important. If we want to make sure that the project lasts for a long time. Then, we need to spend all the time ensuring everything is made perfectly. We can’t talk about how to make sure a DIY project lasts long and we craft things fast.
Well, after a few things fell. Things get ruined after finishing the project. I decided to take a moment to check and see if it’s glued well. For it to be a long-term and handmade project, it requires more attention than we think haha.
When crafting or gluing, in my case. I need to make sure that it’s glued well and won’t fall. After each step, I would check everything. And if something needs a little more work, then, it’s a good time to do it before moving to the next one.
If you say this might take longer than you planned, Well, let me mention that your goal is to get a long-lasting DIY project. Well, DIY projects with wood are strong enough. And sometimes don’t need to be checked. But it’s good to check everything all the time if we want to know how to make sure a DIY project lasts long.
Usually, if it’s a 3D number or a column or even a wall, I would shake it left and right to see how firm it is. And how much it needs if it doesn’t have enough glue, you know.
Extra tip:
Put together a list of things that you need to check every time you finish a step. This way, you ensure that you only check things that are important and will help you. How to make sure a DIY project lasts long. Sometimes people get confused about what to look for.
Well, I will talk about myself. And I had no idea of what to look for when pacing for a quick check. But, as I kept crating, I learned a lot about it. And now I can check important things to help me enjoy the DIY project for a long time.
3. Be careful where you put it
Handmade projects at home sometimes get destroyed quickly. Especially if they’re cardboard. I mean, all materials get broken fast or ruined. But just saying because I do work with cardboard haha. Cardboard DIY crafts or even paper DIY crafts can be easily destroyed.
I’ve had some projects get destroyed and I fixed them. But since it’s my handmade work, I should be more careful.
For example, if the place where I’m going to put it is safe and no one will be able to break it or throw it to the ground. This is where everything gets destroyed by kids haha. And you need to be careful not to make kids easily reach it.
Extra tip
It’s not just about being careful where to put it, but also about things that might get it into a bad place. For example, if you have a handmade desk decoration. And a kid plays with it and throws it on the ground and gets destroyed. That would suck, you know haha.
So when kids play around, I highly recommend putting it out of reach or in a safe place. Pick the best place for every DIY craft. This way, you don’t have to struggle with it or regret your choice.
I’m sure there are a lot of things to pay attention to, but for me. And I had this happen to me and I learned from it. So, I decided to share it with you guys. Hopefully, it will help you learn how to make sure a DIY project lasts long.
I want to know if you have gone through something different or had another experience that is not on the list. Please share it in the comments below. Do you have any DIY crafts to make at home?
4. The layer thickness of the items:
It might not seem that important to you. But, if you want to know how to make sure a DIY project lasts long. Well, one thing you need to pay attention to is how thick the items or materials you use are. Because if you don’t know, it’s very important.
When crafting something with a thin layer. It will be destroyed. Maybe ruined faster than the thick layer DIY projects. Therefore, it’s important to know about the layers. And make sure to make them a bit thick to hold strong for a long time.
Some of my old DIY crafts got destroyed a few days after I crafted them. And that’s normal because I didn’t make the layers thick enough to hold for a long time. So, you don’t have to make the same mistake as I made, which led to losing the project fast.
That’s not what we want if we are looking at how to make sure a DIY project lasts long. If you are a crafter, you will know how important it is to keep the crafts safe for a long time. We worked on it for hours. So we need to protect it.
Paper crafts are usually the quickest ideas to get destroyed. Because it’s easy to rip, ruin, and so thin. Unless you add too many paper layers. And I don’t think it would be possible for you to craft something with that. So, that would be impossible, and the thinner the project, the more careful we need to be.
FYI
For cardboard, there are always a variety of thicknesses and layers. You just need to look for the perfect one. However, if it’s something else and didn’t have any other thickness option for you. Then, how about adding another one to it to make it thicker?
5. Check on the DIY project more often
Another thing that can make your DIY projects last longer is checking on them. Don’t leave them even after a while after crafting them. Always check if everything is still strong and glued together well. This way, you can keep it for a long time.
How to make the DIY crafts last longer can be making sure that things are still strong. And this is one of the things that I do for my DIY crafts as well. If something needs some work, you will do that to make it stay firm.
Sometimes things fall off and sometimes the glue gets weaker. If we skip and don’t pay attention. The DIY crafts won’t last longer than we want. Whether easy DIY ideas or complicated DIY crafts. We need to ensure everything till good.
You can do monthly or weekly check on all the crafts you have. This way, keep things fresh and good. It’s a good way to keep any DIY craft last longer. Unless you craft easy DIY projects to sell, that would save time to check them.
Make sure you have backup materials and tools. Because if you need to do some work on them. You have what you need. Well, if you don’t have it. Then, you might lose the craft idea or DIY decoration. DIY crafts to make at home are different from buying things from the store.
6. Good storage room for your DIY crafts
The more crafts you have, the harder it will be to keep them for a long time. So, a good DIY craft storage room will be perfect. Don’t stack them up in a small area in your room. Because that’s how you lose the DIY craft fast.
DIY crafts to make at home should have a specific room. This way, you will keep them safe and easy to check on them as well. If you want to use any DIY craft, it will be easy as well. So, I highly recommend that you dedicate a room for the DIY craft.
It’s best to have a room or DIY crafts. Don’t need to struggle with how to keep DIY crafts last longer. This will help you to make it super easy to take care of all your DIY crafts. No matter what type of crafts you do.
If you are a crafter, don’t stack them up somewhere not enough for them. Depend on how big the crafts are. As long as its enough area for them to stay. That will be enough if you can’t afford a room for them.
