How to motivate yourself to start learning new languages

Something that I learned over the past few years is that it’s not that easy to learn a new language. That would be for many reasons, and one of them is to start learning. Especially, when you don’t have school. How can you push yourself to learn? Well, that would be part of this post.
Learning a new language is important for many reasons. However, some of us would prefer to stick to our mother tongue rather than go out of our way to learn something new. That is an easy option and a common thing.
And I always asked myself, how do I get myself to start learning new languages. Well, day after day, wondering until I find some things that help me. Allow me to share some of these things in this post. Share how to motivate yourself to start learning new languages.
This post is all about how to get started. However, keep following them because it will help you develop excitement about learning more of the language. Don’t stop until you can speak it fluently and clearly.

Getting yourself to learn a new language is not that easy. Sometimes it can take time, but don’t lose hope. It depends on how determined you are. And that is one thing that can help you get started. So, if you don’t have enough to get started. I think that would be a good point to start from. Developing enough determination.
1. Develop curiosity
I’m going to start with something that can help you develop determination. It is also a great way to help you get started. Well, that would be being curious, and that’s what I mean by developing curiosity. You might ask, how could this help us?
Being curious is a great way to fire up that first step of learning a new language. It’s also great if you want to try other cultures. Ask questions, and look for answers about what that word means. How to say that sentence in that language.
If you don’t have a reason to study the language. Then, you won’t even enjoy learning. So, it would be difficult for you. Therefore, this is a great way to start. And as you keep doing it, at some point, you will decide that you want to learn more of that language.
You can use this with friends as well. This way, it makes it fun and interesting to talk with your friends. Don’t worry if you don’t know what it means if a friend asks you. There are so many ways to find the meaning of that word or sentence.
Also, this will help you find the language you want to learn. The next language would be easy to determine if you are curious. Because curiosity will make you translate, try to pronounce, and try more words.
FYI
There is no limit to how many languages you can be curious about. But, I would recommend making a list of languages that you like based on what you hear and watch online or talking with friends. This way, it will help you narrow it down to one or two. And you can work on them from that point.
At some point, you will feel more curious about learning that language. Don’t let go or make it fade away. Develop it and try more words. Try new sentences and following these ways and tips will also help you with that.
2. Set the purpose of learning a new language
Next, it would be important to allow you to keep going until you master that new language. Setting the purpose of learning. That means it’s time for the why, because nothing in this world would happen without a reason.
If you don’t have a specific purpose. Being able to communicate with other people when traveling serves a good purpose. Many people have this one, including me, but it’s not the main purpose for me. Because I have other purposes as well.
Another common purpose of learning a new language would be to understand other people. But when watching the movies. I know there are subtitles, but it’s better to know their language in case you can find subtitles for that series or movie. Not only that, but also listening to music.
There are a lot of purposes that you can set for you to learn a new language. That would give you some ideas on how to motivate yourself to start learning new languages. Sometimes it might take time for you to follow with a purpose, but it’s OK. As long as you are working on it.
3. Spend time with people who speak the language you want to learn.
Assuming that you have the language that you want to learn. Then, try to surround yourself with people who speak that language. Don’t stay at home too much, expecting that you will start learning new languages.
If you want to stay at home. Maybe you can use online friends, and this would be easier for you if you like t stay at home a lot. In one way or another, keep as many people and friends around you as possible.
Talk with them and hang out. Don’t just have them for nothing. And when you talk with them, you will have one on this list that will help you. Because it’s not just about hanging out with them. That wouldn’t help a lot. It’s a great way to start looking for ways how to motivate yourself to start learning new languages.
Don’t use text a lot. Although it’s a good way, you need to also talk with them. A phone call, or when you go out for dinner, or whatever. This way, it helps to practice the pronunciation of the language you want to learn.
4. Do practices and challenges with friends that have your targeted language
Here is the best one that I love. And I use this with my girlfriend. Practicing and doing challenges with your friends is a great way to get yourself started. At first, you can just be curious, and not determined. But you still challenge your friend. That will be a good start to learning a new language.
I know there are other ways to practice, but this will be more fun and entertaining. Therefore, it will be a good way how to motivate yourself to start learning new languages. Once you get started, all that’s left is for you to keep following these and also the last one I’m going to mention. because it’s very important in this process as well.
When you go out with friends, it would be better to do this when it’s their mother tongue language. But it works with any friend as well. Maybe that can turn into a way to inspire them to learn as well. My focus is on those who have it as their mother tongue because it will help you get the right meaning of the word.
Sometimes translators can’t get the right words. And that friend can also help you with grammar as well. So, that’s why I mentioned doing this with friends who speak that language as their language. This way, you make sure that it’s correct and maybe learn more. A good way to learn how to motivate yourself to start learning new languages and other people.
5. Set goals of learning new languages
Last but not least, this is something very important. And it’s what will help you keep going. During the difficult times. Setting goals for learning the language is important. Also, set milestones/levels to help you keep it interesting and fun.
It’s not just good advice on how to motivate yourself to start learning new languages. But also, when you start, sometimes it will be difficult to continue. However, it will help you if you have a clear aim and goals to achieve. You will stay determined as long as you are willing and want to achieve them,

I watch a lot of anime and Japanese films and shows, so I thought I’d try to learn Japanese. This was before I found out I had dyslexia that affects my ability to process phonetics and retain information. It didn’t take me long before I quit, but I may try again some day
I see, I love anime too haha. I had a friend who taught me a little about Japanese.
These are such great ways to motivate yourself to learn a new language ! This is so timely because I just downloaded the Duolingo app and am currently teaching myself Spanish!

I find that already wanting to learn a language is a huge step in creating motivation to learn it. Unlike in school, when we are forced to take certain language courses and don’t want to, a desire to learn it is key. However, all these tips are really helpful. Having people who can speak that language fluently does make a huge difference.
Thank you so much for sharing your thought on this.

Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts. That’s something I’m trying to learn as well.
We have 11 official languages in South Africa and hundreds (plus or minus) of other unofficial ones. I have learnt at least 4 of the official languages, it gets bumpy but I’m doing really well. I want to learn more. It is important to learn new languages, I agree.
Wow, that’s too many languages. That’s awesome you are doing well.
I have been wanting to learn a different language, it’s just that I need some motivation to start. Thanks for your post, this is very helpful!
That’s awesome I hope this post helps you somehow.
Planning a trip to an area that uses that language is another great motivator. And you’ll be rewarded for your effort by being able to actually use your new skill right away.

I’m fully biligual (English and Spanish). But, exactly 186 days ago, I decided that I wanted to learn Italian. I’ve been taking a daily lesson since then and haven’t failed. I was watching a TV show about Italian cuisine and I just fell in love with the country. My goal is to visit Italy and be able to talk with the people in their native language. And when I finish my course, my next one on the list is Portuguese. So, don’t be afraid to learn a new language, it is possible and easier than you think if you are really interested. Thanks for this post.
Wow, that’s awesome. I’m still trying to learn Spanish.
This is a helpful post! I’m learning Danish and I agree you need to have a reason or desire to learn the language or else your learning could be hindered. I also agree it’s good to be able to talk IRL in the language you’re learning because for me at least, speaking the language is the most challenging (out of reading, listening, and writing).
Thank you so much for your feedback <3
Having a purpose to study a language is always a good motivator. I started learning a language with the purpose to be a translator and it’s what drives me to keep learning.

Great tips on finding reasons not only to start learning a new language but find better success! Personally it has always been a mix between connecting with my Cuban heritage and my love for travel. However, I often struggle just because I dont practice my family’s native language of Spanish and am surrounded by American English.
But personally I love you #3 Spend time with people who speak the language you want to learn! I still study on my own, use apps like babbel and other tools. But recently I found an online tutor who 1x a week speaks with me in Spanish and lets me stubble as I try to think and translate in his native tongue without too much judgement.
Thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts!
This is something I need to start doing! We travel to Mexico every year, and I should be better about learning Spanish.
